A core value of the Rethinking Mental Health Conferences is that persons with lived experience play a crucial role in developing the program and presenting their perspectives and concepts, making the conference series unique in the field of mental health.

The main organizer of the conference, the Federation Global Initiative on Psychiatry, has been at the forefront of the international effort to make human rights a central component of mental health care delivery for more than 45 years. In its work at the intersection of mental health and human rights, it has focused on innovation, evidence-based care programs that place persons with lived experience at the center, and services that are integrated into their socio-cultural context.
