Remke van Staveren

The Netherlands

Mrs. Remke van Staveren (1966) is a Dutch psychiatrist who works as an outpatient specialist in mental health care at BuurtzorgT (community care). Previously, she was a general practitioner and a teacher of doctor-patient communication at the University VUmc (Amsterdam). She is the initiator of Heart for Mental Health Care: a movement that believes in the power of (self) compassion and collaborates towards a more recovery-oriented and dignified mental health care system in the Netherlands.

Remke van Staveren has previously authored seven books on communication and Mental Health Care. Patient-centred Communication: Guide to Medical Practice (2010) and Patient-centred Communication in Mental Health (2013). This was followed by more recovery-oriented books, including Hart for Mental Health Care (2016), Hart voor recovery (2018), Recovery in the Pocket (2021), and Less Meds (2022); all in Dutch. Following the publication of Less Meds (2022), which addresses responsible tapering of psychotropic medications, she helped establish a discontinuation clinic. Her newest book A Thin Line (2025) is a more narrative and personal book about mental health and how we can take better care of ourselves.
